Evelyn lifted her head, watching him. She massaged her forehead, frustrated with herself and him. For a moment, she fought back the urge to say something to stop him walking away. Then she forced out a feeble, "okay."

She wrapped her arms around her torso, closing her burning eyes. What else was she supposed to do other than acquiesce to his wanting out? She heard Nova whine softly and then the dog padded over to her, nosing her foot and turning large, brown eyes up to Jake as the Spaniard passed him.

Jacob stopped on his way to give Nova a pet on the head, he continued onto the window sliding it open. He dropped his hands to his side, gazing out the window he forgot he was leaving for a minute. Jake licked his lips, and flicked his eyes back to Evelyn.

"I don't wanna end this. But I don't want you thinking I wanna do this just so I can hook up with random girls. I'm doing what I thought you wanted, what we both needed to do I guess but we just kept putting off. And I don't know, things aren't right between us now and I just don't want to push anything." Jacob said feeling sort of the bad guy in all of this.

Evelyn understood what he was talking about. She lifted her chin to look at him across the dim room, taking a slow, deep breath.

She left it out, feeling herself slump in. "Let's," her voice came out dry, cracking, whispery and she cleared her throat, "let's start over."

"From...from day one. Not as friends," she clarified. "But pretend...pretend I wasn't that weird girl who threw the sunglasses case at you on move-in weekend?" A faint smile reluctantly tugged on her lips.

"As long as you pretend that I wasn't the creepy foreign guy who hit on you, thus resulting in the throwing of the sunglasses case." Jacob said with traces of laughter in his voice.

With the joke aside though, Jacob wondered. "But what do you mean by staring over but not as friends? As what then?"

Evelyn paused, shifting on the bed a little as her leg fell asleep. "Like...just met, you know? Clean slate, we know nothing about our past mistakes, we just met in the lounge through, say, a mutual friend." She licked her dry lips.

Nova walked over to a chew toy, gnawing on it.

"Do you really think that could work? You know with all our history and crap." Jake asked Evelyn. They had both been through so much together it seemed like it would be too hard to just give up.

"What's the alternative?" she asked plainly. "Go on with this weird on-off thing, which we keep trying to end but it never works out properly? This way, we'll end it without hating each other." She looked down at her fingers and reached over for a tissue from her nightstand to clean off the mascara smears around her eyes. "Shit."

"No, I know." Jake sighed, scratching his head. "I get what you're saying, it sounds like it would make sense. How about we try it then?" Jacob asked skeptically.

Jake knew that he didn't want to end up hating Evelyn. Because despite how much she bugged the crap out of him at times, there were good things about her. "So does this mean since we're strangers I shouldn't be in your dorm room at three in the morning?"

"I don't know," Evelyn said with a forced smirk because she really found nothing funny about what she was about to say. "Casanova in a random girl's bedroom in the middle of the night somehow doesn't sound that weird."

"You're right its the typical college esperience." Jake said laying on a thick accent. "Jo kno, chicka. The way ze moonlight hits jou, you look muy caliente" Jacob sauntered back over to her bed.

"Allow me to introduce ma self. Me llamo Esteban Julio Ricardo Montoya De La Rosa Ramírez." Jake said raising his eyebrows, with a smirk.

Evelyn raised both eyebrows in disbelief, unsmiling. "Really, of all things, Esteban?"

Jacob dropped the accent. "Well Jacob doesn't sound as nice in Spanish. Its all like "Yak-cub." Sounds like comit."

Evelyn folded her legs Indian-style. "Use your last name? Like Casanova did?" she suggested, looking down as Nova bounded onto her bed and curled up with his head on her knee.

Evelyn, increasingly conscious she was still in her damned nightdress, shifted uncomfortably, yanking her duvet up again. "It sounds like...a brand of dirt bikes, actually."

Jacob noticed Evelyn shifting trying to get comfortable. It was probably because of what she was wearing. Jake shrugged off his jacket and held it out to Evelyn. "Here that way you only have to cover up your legs"

Evelyn looked up and her cheeks burned red. She shifted again, looking away from him and resisting a sudden urge to slap him. "You..."

Her dignity won out. She glowered at him, reaching up and taking his jacket. She hastily slid her arms into it, allowing her duvet to fall from her. As usual, the jacket was huge on her and her hands disappeared before the sleeves ended. She yanked the sleeves up and then tucked her duvet around herself again, trying not to inhale the leathery scent swarming her. Her stomach clenched. The jacket smelled way too much like him. It reminded her of all the other times she'd borrowed his clothes. The past wasn't so easy to erase.

"Just for that, I predict this acquaintance doomed," she remarked, ignoring the flush that rose again to hr cheeks.

"Must you be such a Negative Nancy?" Jake remarked cheekily, leaning back against the window folding his arms across his chest. He looked at Evelyn, and a smile flashed briefly across his lips seeing her in his jacket.

Jake shook his head. "I mean what, I let Lola keep my hoodies or wear my jackets before. Its the same thing." Although Jake knew that this was different.

"I know," she said quickly, more to reassure herself. Just acquaintances, nothing else. "It's just," she fumbled for words, looking down at Nova so the moonlight wouldn't reveal her flushed face, "you're being weird tonight, is all. You just, um, seem to be injecting some kind of sexual innuendo into half the things you say. I mean, dominatrix? Lesbian? And now - " she paused, embarrassed.

Jacob's eyes widened, he hadn't been meaning to imply anything when he said those things. He was just mad, and annoyed. Or was it because of something else? "No I didn't-- I was mad when I said those things, I wasn't trying to imply anything."

This friends thing was gonna be hard.

"I-I-I wasn't trying to, no! I mean..." Jacob spluttered, rubbing the back of his neck. "I mean, well cause you see you kept crouching over like a turtle or something and I figured that, well you know." Jake was rambling, what was wrong with him?!

He knew he shouldn't have mentioned Evelyn's legs. "I was just trying to be nice is all."
